This event will be based at Roseview Camping and Caravan Park in Oban PA34 4QJ - GR NM841279 – 01631 562755 from the Friday evening. Note the directions on the website – GPS will send you astray.
This site does not take advance bookings and you will need to individually settle with the site. If the site is full, which is extremely unlikely there is another site close by (Oban Caravan & Camping Park PA34 4QH - which also does not take advance bookings!) that should have space.
We will convene at 09h00 each morning to explain & plan the day trips, shuttles etc. There are lots of opportunities to paddle in this area and we will choose day trips that are suitable to the experience of the groups and the weather. We may divide up if it makes sense to do so.
3 days of outings around Oban, an area with lots of paddling opportunities from circumnavigation of Kerrara or Seil, Crossing to Lismore or Mull or if the weather is poor more sheltered paddling around Shuna, Lock Melfort, Lock Feochan or Loch Etive. We can even take a turn on the Falls of Lora.
We will have two full days and a slightly shorter day on Monday (Finish by 15h00) to allow people to get away on their return journeys. Saturday night we will have a BBQ using the shelter at the campsite (included in the fee). We will aim to have a night paddle on the Sound of Kerrara and Oban Harbour if conditions are good on Sunday evening.
This weekend is not a coaching course but you will be safely guided by experienced and qualified sea kayak leaders.
Our main objectives of the weekend are to bring likeminded sea paddlers together, share experiences and make the contacts necessary for further trips. For those with less experience the weekend is an opportunity for you to be guided safely to coastal areas you may not feel are within your reach or current experience.
There will be group trips and support aimed specifically at newcomers to sea kayaking at this event, as well as trips for more experienced paddlers.
This event is suitable for paddlers with some kayaking experience, but not necessarily on the sea, as well as others with more experience, who are looking to improve their independence to plan and execute coastal trips. Maximum 12 participants. This event is open to Cumbrian paddlers – or friends of – with an interest in sea kayaking who would like to extend and develop their skills and experience. We would like to welcome some newcomers to sea kayaking to this event.
Using a specific sea kayak is very important, so if you do not have one please borrow or hire one from a club or commercially. Cumbria Canoeists have three sea kayaks that are available for a small donation.
Personal paddling equipment, adequate gear, a change of clothes, food and drink for each day’s paddle are essential - Paddler Kit lists are available here.
Responsibility for camping and cooking each day will be left with the participants, but do not hesitate to ask for any further guidance.
Before you can book on any Cumbria Canoeist's event you must have completed a one time Paddler Registration.
