Our main objectives of the weekend are to introduce paddlers who are new to sea kayaking to this sport and give them the opportunity to experience safe fun group trips in a great coastal environment. Locally there are lots of sandy beaches, sea cliffs with lots of rock hopping opportunities and potentially a little bit of surf to play in. It is also a fantastic fossil hunting coast and full of interesting industrial archaeological remains. Runswick Bay has interesting cafes and a charming real ale pub that serves good food.
For those with less experience the weekend is an opportunity for you to be guided safely to coastal areas you may not feel are within your reach or current experience.
This event will be based at Runswick Bay Camping and Caravan Park on the North Yorkshire coast – PC TS13 5HR GR NZ 806163 – Telephone 0947 840997 from the Friday evening.
You can attend either one or both days at this event, camping as many nights as you want or even travelling up on the day (a very early start…), just let the organiser know. A block booking has been made for camping for up to two nights – but you will need to individually settle with the site. Sign in at reception and mention you are with the “Cumbria Canoeists” group and they will direct you to our allocated area and charge you the reduced rate.
We will convene at 09h00 each morning to explain & plan the day trips, shuttles etc. There are lots of opportunities to paddle in this area and we will choose day trips that are suitable to the experience of the groups and the weather. We may divide up if it makes sense to do so. We will have a full day on Saturday, including potentially an early evening paddle) and a slightly shorter day on Sunday (finish by 16h00) to allow people to get away on their return journeys.
This weekend is not a coaching course but you will be safely guided by experienced and qualified sea kayak leaders who will help you learn new skills. This event is suitable for paddlers with some kayaking experience, but not necessarily on the sea, as well as others with more experience, who are looking to improve their independence to plan and execute coastal trips.
Maximum 8 participants. This event is open to Cumbrian paddlers – or friends of – with an interest in sea kayaking who would like to extend and develop their skills and experience. We would like to welcome some newcomers to sea kayaking to this event.
Using a specific sea kayak is very important, so if you do not have one please borrow or hire one from a club or commercially. Cumbria Canoeists have three sea kayaks and related kit that are available for a small donation.
Personal paddling equipment, adequate gear, a change of clothes, food and drink for each day’s paddle are essential - Paddler Kit lists are available here.
Responsibility for camping and cooking each day will be left with the participants, but do not hesitate to ask for any further guidance.
