This is a new trip for Cumbria Canoeists - aiming to explore the fantastic environment and the differences between Jura and Islay.  If you need an intoduction to these  fascinating places read Ian Mitchell's 'Isles of the West', or Paul Murton's 'The Hebrides'.
We will take the 13h00 ferry from Kennacraig to Port Askaig on Islay on Tuesday 26 June.  The aim is to leave cars at Kennacraig and travel as foot passengers with our loaded boats.  We will use the rest of the afternoon after our arrival to travel to an approriate local wildcamp site dependent on the weather.  The aim is to wild camp around these islands for up to six nights with the option of travelling back to the mainland from either Port Ellen or Port Askaig on Sunday 1st or Monday 2nd of July..
We will choose trips that are suitable to the experience of the groups and the weather.  Our main objectives of the trip is to bring likeminded sea paddlers together, share experiences in this remote environment and make the contacts necessary for further trips.
Jura is about 100km and Islay about 140km to circumnavigate.  We will need fair conditions to do either!  We can probably aim to do 200km max over the trip, so there are decisons to be made, depending what the weather throws at us and the keeness of the group!
We will convene at 09h00 each morning to explain & plan the days and camp plans etc.
We aim to mix paddling with other activities - the possibility to do the Paps, and there are a lot of distilleries to potentially visit!  You can get a good introduction to the islands here.
This event is not a coaching course but you will be safely guided by experienced and qualified sea kayak leaders who will help you learn new skills.
This event is suitable for paddlers with sea-kayaking experience of extended days and journeying on the coast,  including those who are looking to improve their independence to plan and execute coastal trips with wild camping.  If you have doubts whether your capabilities and experience are sufficient please talk to the organiser. Maximum 8 participants.
This event is open to Cumbrian paddlers – or friends of – with an interest in sea kayaking who would like to extend and develop their skills and experience.
Using a specific sea kayak is very important, so if you do not have one please borrow or hire one from a club or commercially.  Cumbria Canoeists have three sea kayaks and related kit that are available for a small donation.
Personal paddling equipment, adequate gear, a change of clothes, food and drink for each day’s paddle are essential - Paddler Kit lists are available here.
Responsibility for camping and cooking each day will be left with the participants, but do not hesitate to ask for any further guidance.
Before you can book on any Cumbria Canoeist's event you must have completed a one time Paddler Registration.
Cost: £55 payable by BACS to “Cumbria Canoeists” Sort Code 01-08-93 A/C# 14482177.  Please add your surname and the event reference as the BACS payment reference to make sure we can track payments.
If you are not a member of British Canoeing, we have to arrange membership equivalent liability insurance cover for you for on the water session (applies to all participants and guides). The cost is £5 per person per event; Alternatively, we would encourage BC adult membership at £45 or £80 for a couple per annum. Please add the insurance charge to the event fee payment.
Places are allocated on a "payment received" basis and the booking status is indicated at the top of this page.
