Anglesey is one of the best sea kayaking locations in the UK – with opportunities to paddle in all but the worst weather! It has sheltered trips for less experienced paddlers and tide races and overfalls to challenge the most experienced. The scenery, varied water and coastline and the ever-present wildlife always give something to remember. The scenery, varied water and coastline and the ever-present wildlife always give something to remember.
We will convene at 09h00 each morning to explain & plan the day trips, shuttles etc. There are lots of opportunities to paddle in this area and we will choose day trips and crossings that are suitable to the experience of the groups, the weather and the tides which run very strongly around Anglesey in certain places. We may divide up if it makes sense to do so. We will have a full day on Saturday and a slightly shorter day on Sunday (finish by 16h00) to allow people to get away on their return journeys.
We will choose day trips that are suitable to the experience of the groups and the weather. Our main objectives of the weekend are to bring likeminded sea paddlers together, share experiences and make the contacts necessary for further trips. For those with less experience the weekend is an opportunity for you to be guided safely to coastal areas you may not feel are within your reach or current experience. We may divide up if it makes sense to do so.
This weekend is not a coaching course but you will be safely guided by experienced and qualified sea kayak leaders who will help you learn new skills.
This event is suitable for paddlers with sea-kayaking experience of extended days and journeying on the coast, including those who are looking to improve their independence to plan and execute coastal trips. If you have doubts whether your capabilities and experience are sufficient please talk to the organiser.
Maximum 16 participants. This event is open to Cumbrian paddlers – or friends of – with an interest in sea kayaking who would like to extend and develop their skills and experience.
We will meet on Friday night on the 13th at Anglesey Outdoor Centre, Porthdafarch Rd Holyhead Anglesey LL65 2LP GR 808238 ( 01407 769351. A block booking has been made for camping for two nights – but you will need to individually settle with the site. There are Yurts and bunkhouse accommodation options available too if you want to book them. There is a pub ‘Paddler’s Return’ with good food on site, as well as great showers and drying facilities as you would expect for a centre set up for sea-kayaking. There are supermarkets close by if needed. We can eat as a group at the Paddler's Return on Saturday night - and I hope I don't have to get all the orders in like last year....
Using a specific sea kayak is very important, so if you do not have one please borrow or hire one from a club or commercially. Cumbria Canoeists have three sea kayaks and related kit that are available for a small donation.
Personal paddling equipment, adequate gear, a change of clothes, food and drink for each day’s paddle are essential - Paddler Kit lists are available here.
Responsibility for camping and cooking each day will be left with the participants, but do not hesitate to ask for any further guidance.
