A real classic area with so much on offer, and usually some places to paddle with shelter if the weather is unkind. Ideally the trip involves an anticlockwise circumnavigation of the Garvellachs, Scarba, Lunga, Luing, Shuna and a return by way Torsa and Cuan Sound. The tidal streams in this area are notorious, including Grey Dogs, Corryvrechan and Cuan Sound so careful tidal planning is essential. We'll set off from the harbour at Ellenabeich early mid morning on the 16th. Ideally weather permitting we will make the crossing to Belnahua for lunch, and then across to Dun Chonnuil and Garbh Eileach and down the chain of the Garvellachs to Eileach an Naoimh (Island of the Saints) where we plan to wild camp. This is the site of the oldest ecclesiastical buildings in Britain, an ancient monastery founded by St Brendan in 542 AD, but deserted after it was destroyed by Vikings in the early 10th century. The next morning we will either go south to the north-west shore of Jura to explore the caves and raised beaches towards the bothy at Glengarrisdale as a destination for the second night, or East across to Lunga to either camp there close to the lagoon or to Grey Dogs, or further east again on the southern tip of Luing or on Rubha Aird Luing if there are too many cattle around! The following day we will track north, probably up Shuna Sound, and have a final nights wild camp somewhere close to Cuan Ferry or on the north end of Luing. The final day we will return to Easedale, and depending on timing have an opportunity to explore Insh or even circumnavigate Seil!
We will convene each morning to explain & plan the day, due to tidal planning we may need early starts or late finishes, but we will aim for the trip to be well within participant's physical capacity! Trip plans will depend on the weather conditions, tides and the capabilities of the group(s). We may divide up if it makes sense to do so.
This trip is not a coaching course but you will be safely guided by experienced and qualified sea kayak leaders. Our main objectives of the trip are to bring like minded sea paddlers together, share experiences and make the contacts necessary for further trips in this area.
We will aim to finish by 16h00 on Monday to give people time to get home.
