Cumbria Canoeists aims to develop, qualify or upgrade as many as 10 sea leaders this season. There are 4 separate events as part of this initiative.
These events and the leadership development group are open to Cumbrian paddlers – or friends of – who are committed to develop and gain accreditation as sea leaders, and who are prepared to be mentored and act as assistants for Cumbria Canoeist's sea kayak gathering and coaching events through this season, and then as stand alone qualified leaders in subsequent seasons.
Paddlers need to be at or above 3 star level to participate in the group. All these events are subsidised by up to 50% grant funding out of surpluses from our sea kayaking activities.
This leadership development group will be grant assisted through sea leadership training, and then will be able to assist on events through the year (for which they don't pay participant costs) and be mentored by existing sea leaders so that they will be skilled and experienced enough to go through a subsidised assessment at the end of the season. They will need to have a valid 16 hour first aid certificate before assessment.
Due to high demand we have just added extra training and assessment events with Phil Clegg at Sea Kayaking Anglesey.
SKE3a - Leadership Training Weekend - Fleet Isles - 3-4 March 2018 - Maximum 10 participants. Cost £35.
The first event is an introduction to leadership and group / incident management techniques for effective and safe leadership of groups in coastal waters in moderate conditions. This will be organised by Simon McElroy and will be based at Mossyard Campsite near Gatehouse of Fleet DG7 2ET - Tel no: 01557 840226.
You will need to come prepared to be involved in exercises where you will plan, brief and lead an intermediate group of paddlers in short paddling excursions and exercises - so you should make sure you understand the weather, tides, local geography and sea conditions you are likely to encounter, and have the appropriate equipment to act as a leader. Leader Kit lists are available here.
We will also arrange some challenging scenarios and incidents to aid your leadership development.
We will have a number of experienced sea leaders and coaches to run the training event, as well as some guinea-pig participant paddlers for you to manage!
A block booking will be made for camping for two nights – but you will need to individually settle with the site. Sign in at reception and mention you are with “Cumbria Canoeists” group and they will direct you to our allocated area and charge you the reduced rate.
We will convene at 09h00 on Saturday and Sunday mornings to explain & plan the day's activities, shuttles etc. Plans will depend on the weather conditions, tides and the capabilities of the group(s). We may divide up if it makes sense to do so. Saturday will be a full day and may include a night navigation exercise if conditions allow. Sunday will be shorter and we will aim to finish and debrief by 16h00 to give people time to get home.
Our main objectives of the weekend is to prepare participants to make the most of the formal British Canoeing training events in Anglesey later in the month.
