Chairman

John Soady

I am a sea kayak leader in Lakeland Canoe Club. I have been paddling for thirty something years, and also - between injuries - Nordic skier (i.e. proper skiing), fell runner, orienteer and cyclist. I’m mainly into expedition / multi-day paddling. Though must say, having done that in Greenland, the Med and Scandinavia, for me those environments don’t hold a candle to the west coast of Scotland for remoteness, tidal challenge and wildlife; and that is where I find my mojo.

Vice Chair
Webmaster and Communications Officer

Jamie Magee

I started paddling back in 2011 in touring kayaks. As my children got to an age where they wanted to come I branched out, and got some training, before joining Duddon canoe club. I now enjoy paddling both kayaks and canoes. I'm a level 2 coach and open canoe leader.
I am also a teacher and a little jealous when those who are retired run amazing trips during term time.

Over the last 4 years I have been webmaster and at the AGM in 2023 stepped up to be Vice chair.

CC Treasurer

Mike Sunderland

Ex Slalom, polo and white-water racer - now paddles white water and sea kayak and sometimes seen in an open boat!

Chairman of Cumbria Canoeists (The British Canoeing Regional Development Team of Cumbria) proudly leading an outstanding team of passionate paddlesport volunteers.  Behind the scenes, Mike represents the region in partnership with British Canoeing, organising CPD training Updates for Coach/Leaders and care takes the Access and Waterways matters, with the Cumbria Team.

As a Level 5 white water coach, experienced and qualified sea kayak leader, Mike would rather "be on the water than in meetings".

Secretary and Safeguarding Officer

I started paddling while in school. My main passions are Sea Kayaking, Open Boat Expeditions and Canoe Sailing. My main role as Vice Chairman is looking after Mike; making sure he doesn’t get arrested. I’m Level 4 Open boat and Level 3 Sea Kayak and Inland in old money.
I am a teacher and have worked in Outdoor Education for the past 30 years. I'm now retired!

Regional Race Rep
John Sherwen

John started paddling in his early 30s while teaching in Barrow and helping with a scout group in Ulverston. His first interest was in open canoe but over the years this has expanded. He now has coaching awards in 5 disciplines, with 4* in another and 2 Discipline support modules. He competes in marathon races in K1, K2 and C1 and in K1 and C1 wildwater racing. He is part of the Duddon race coaching team and has access, via club and personal boats, to over 60 flat water and WWR craft of all types - K4, C1 high kneeler and sit and switch, and WWR C2 .
Paddlers, adult and juniors, are always welcome at Duddon’s base in Barrow to try race boats and get some guidance from the race team there.
