We have gradually built up the polo scene in Cumbria, especially since 2012, when Penrith Canoe Club was set up specifically to play Canoe Polo and wanted some other clubs locally to play against. We have been running about 4 cumbria polo tournaments per year, 2 in Penrith & 2 in Kendal hosted by Lakeland Canoe Club. We have also had a development day on Barrow Docks with Duddon Canoe Club. which we hope to develop, now that they have an outdoor pitch. The focus of the cumbria tournaments has always been about getting people involved and giving them a fun experience, before they commit to entering regional or national leagues. The clubs who usually take part are Penrith, Lakeland, Duddon, Copeland and Lancaster University, but we're always happy for others to have a go. Penrith compete in the regional and national leagues, and have had players go through to train and play with national squads (even winning medals!), but for the cumbria tournaments, we mix up the teams with beginners, to make a more even tournament, with the emphasis on coaching and developing younger or less experienced players. The teams are open (ie mixed male & female), but we would also love to set up more women's teams to compete in the regional women's leagues.
